Global warming is the most important environmental issue facing humankind so far, and all countries across the world are under great pressure from emission reduction. In 2012, China made a commitment to decreasing carbon dioxide emission per unit of GDP by 40% to 45% than 2005 by 2020 in the Copenhagen Summit. While as the electric power industry is a major emitter of carbon dioxide, it is extremely urgent for this industry to clarify its carbon dioxide emissions, mission reduction tasks and emission drivers and hereby design an energy conservation and emission reduction policy. This paper analyzed carbon dioxide emissions and emission intensity of the electric power industry in three calculation principles from three viewpoints-production-based viewpoint, consumption-based viewpoint and income-based viewpoint; and then used IO-SDA (input-output structural decomposition analysis) model to dissect social and economic factors that drive carbon dioxide emission of this industry and proposed policy suggestions for carbon dioxide emission reduction of this industry from the angle of different drivers.
