In this study,drought indices of every month from 1961 to 2010 in Qinghai Plateau were calculated using SPI drought index method and based on monthly precipitation data from 27 meteorological stations.The years and the number of stations of drought occurrence were recorded.The relationship of spatial distribution, the basic climatic features and the drought response to climate changes were analyzed.Results showed that drought occurred everywhere in Qinghai Plateau.In March to May,drought mainly occurred in the eastern and southern parts,gradually decreasing towards the northwest.In June to August,drought mainly occurred in some eastern parts and eastern Yushu.In September to November,drought was mainly distributed in eastern and southern parts of Qinghai Plateau.In recent 50 years, the range and intensity of drought were gradually declined year by year with a significantly positive correlation which is most obvious in spring.Generally,drought years of Qinghai Plateau mainly occurred in spring or during spring to summer.A large-scale drought occurred in summer.In years without meteorological drought occurrence, local drought happened in some stations.Impact of climate warming on drought of Qinghai Plateau was not marked,and increased precipitation in Qinghai Plateau is the main reason of reduced drought and weakened intensity.
