Cenozoic strata in the Weihe area of Shaanxi Province are well developed. However, Cenozoic stratigraphic classification and correlation in the Weihe area is controversial. Based on new field data and previously published data,Cenozoic strata in the Weihe area can be divided as follow: the Eocene Honghe Formation; Oligocene Bailuyuan Formation; Miocene Lengshuigou Formation, Koujiacun Formation, Bahe Formation; Pliocene Youhe Formation, Pleistocene Sanmen Formation, Xiehu Formation, Qianxian Formation; Holocene Banpo Formation. The Weihe area was characterized by extremely arid and hot weather in early Eocene, but the climate gradually became mild and humid in the Oligocene and then dry and cold in the late stage of late Oligocene. Lakes were distributed widely in early Miocene, when the climate was relatively humid and gradually became dry and warm with intervals of dry and cold environment in the late Miocene. The Pliocene was characterized by overall warmer climate, with gradual cooling toward late Pliocene. As the ice age arrived in the Quaternary Period, the climate turned cold and dry, and this change contributed to the semiarid and subhumid environment in this area.
