Facing climate change and energy security problems, low carbon electricity is worldwide development tendency in future. European Commission sets up ambitious greenhouse gas reduction goals and aims to push forward low carbon electricity evolution. Some European organizations have conducted researches on feasibility of low carbon target and have drawn up roadmap under different scenarios. By analyzing related published reports, this paper summarized European low carbon roadmap at generation, transmission and demand side levels. The essential idea of the roadmap lies in achieving interconnection of various green energy sources in European scope so that supply and demand can be balanced in large range with high energy efficiency. Important measures include transition towards a low carbon energy structure, exploration of large-scale renewable source sites, construction of intelligent pan-European super grid and development of demand side. At last, enlightened by European green electricity strategies, advice for future low carbon electricity development in China was provided.
