The knowledge of heat and salt budget is crucial to our understanding of global climate change and the coupling between atmosphere and ocean.But,due to the highly disagreement of temporary and spatial distributions of history ship-based observational data in subsurface ocean,biases of different oceanographic instruments,the choice of climatology on heat and salt content anomaly calculation and so on,estimation of the upper ocean heat and salt content had much uncertainty,particularly,the seasonal and inter-annual variations of heat and salt content and their related physical mechanisms have not been researched deeply.Fortunately,after the implementation of global Argo observation program which began in the year 2000,more than 1million profiles of temperature and salinity with high measurement accuracy and high resolution have been accumulated.Such excellence makes the precisely calculation of upper ocean heat and salt content and the analysis of their variations to be possible.So,based on gridded Argo profile data from January 2001to July 2014,together with Cyclostationary Empirical Orthogonal Function(CSEOF),Maximum Entropy Method(MEM)and correlation analysis,we studied the spatial distribution and temporal variations of upper ocean heat and salt content(OHC & OSC) in the Western Pacific Warm Pool(WPWP),and the probable reasons of the variations were also discussed. The main results show that variations of the OHC in subsurface region are stronger than that at the surface,which are significantly influenced by ENSO events,whereas the great change of OSC occurs at the surface and displays a quasi-decadal variation.Moreover,CSEOF analysis shows that the main mode of the OHC in the WPWP region has an east-west anti-phase oscillation on inter-annual time scale. while the OSC anomaly has a"positive-negative-positive" triple mode from north to south.According to time series analysis,we found that,after 2007,the OHC had three times phase adjustments which was highly related to ENSO(El Nino-Southern Oscillation)events,but only once for OSC.Finally,the variations of the OHC are closely related to ENSO events,locally zonal wind and zonal currents,while the causes of OSC variation are more complicated.Among the factors,zonal currents and fresh water flux has a positive feedback on OSC change.
