The hazard assessment of land sandy desertification has a significant scientific and practical value for the prevention and control of sandy desertification disasters. A theoretical framework and a comprehensive multi-indicator model were proposed for assessing sandy desertification hazard in this paper. Then, the sandy desertification hazard in north China was assessed. Results are as follows: ① Sandy desertification hazards in north China were mainly mild, slightly mild, moderate and slightly serious. The hazard degree increased gradually from the coastal areas to the inland and from the northeast to the northwest; ② The hazard degree of sandy desertification in north China was in a mitigation trend. Compared with 2000, land area with moderate hazard degree was reduced significantly, and the area with other grades remained stable in 2010; ③ Climate change was regarded as the main driving force of the mitigation trend of sandy desertification hazard in north China. Moreover, human activities played a significant role in reducing desertification disaster.
