Based on the collation and analysis of the paleoflood hydrological study in the upper reaches of the Hanjiang river, the paleoflood events recorded by 5 sedimentary profiles in the upper reaches of Hanjiang river during the Northern Song Dynasty were studied combineing with literature records and climate background analysis. The results show that the Northern Song Dynasty experienced frequent occurrence of floods.According to the influence of flood disaster, the severity of the disaster and sedimentary regularity of the flood mark, the flood events recorded in the upper reaches of the Hanjiang river may be the flood event in June(lunar month)in Taiping Xingguo (982)during the Northern Song Dynasty.Tree-ring,ice core, stalagmites and historical documents show that Taiping Xingguo seven years (982)during the Northern Song Dynasty is in the climate change period. The paleoflood event recorded by 5 sedimentary profiles in the upper reaches of Hanjiang river may be the instantaneous response to the variable climate at that time. The research results could provide scientific basis for flood control, disaster reduction and water conservancy construction in the upper reaches of Hanjiang river.
