The Quaternary tectonic movement and climate change show obvious periodic characteristics. Geomorphologic unit is the macroscopic manifestation of the periodic geological evolution. The constitutive soil of different geomorphologic units has characteristic lithology,genesis,structure and hydrogeological character. On the basis of comprehensive investigation of the geomorphology,Quaternary geological characteristics (such as stratum, genesis, lithology, etc.) and engineering geological conditions of deposits in Wuhan area, it is found that the geomorphic units have a significantly macroscopic control on engineering geological conditions. Thus, we proposed that the first-level geomorphic zoning (also named as geomorphic zone) could be used as the division principle of engineering geological zoning; and the second-level geomorphic zoning (also named as the geomorphic unit of genetic type) could be used as the division principle of sub-engineering geological zoning. Based on the above division principle,Wuhan metropolitan development zone could be divided into 4 engineering geological regions and 14 sub-engineering geological regions. In addition, according to the lithology, genesis and sedimentary environment of the Quaternary sediments in different geomorphic units, the engineering geological characteristics of each engineering geological regions and sub-regions have also been discussed in this paper.
