Fungi are considered to play crucial roles in nutrient cycling dynamics in marine ecosystems. The studies on fungal diversity, distribution pattern and environmental driving factors are undoubtedly important for understanding the influence of global climate changes and anthropogenic activities upon microbiomes. With the technological development, especially the application of high-throughput sequencing method, numerous research findings are achieved in recent years. With the implementation of national marine development strategy,Chinese researchers are beginning to conduct investigation of fungal diversity in deep and distant seas, and have made some achievements. In this paper, the recent achievements and current status of researches on molecular diversity, community composition and spatio-temporal variations of marine fungi are reviewed. The problems existed in these fields are pointed out and the future developments are predicted.
