Based on the recording haze days during 1961-2013 and statistical haze days of 86 meteorological stations in Guangdong, the climatic characteristics and comparison of recording and statistical haze days in Guangdong were studied by using statistical diagnostic methods, such as linear regression analysis, the computation of trend coefficients. The results indicate that the distribution of annual mean haze days for recording and statistical were quite similar, but statistical haze days were more than recording haze days from 10 to 80 d. The distribution of annual mean haze days in Guangdong can be divided into three areas: (1) more haze regions: including the Pearl River delta area,Nanxiong in the north and Shantou in the southeast of Guangdong, the annual statistical haze days were 40.0 ?144.5 d. (2) general haze regions: including the north of middle area of Guangdong, the annual statistical haze days were 20.0 -39.9 d. (3) less haze regions: including the southwest area of Guangdong, the most east part of Guangdong, the annual statistical haze days were 1.0 ?19.9 d. The annual recording and statistical hazes days in Guangdong increased obviously at a mean rate of 11 d/(10 a), increased significantly since 1990,especially had rapid growth after 2003 and the top was at 2007, it decreased with fluctuation after 2008. The increasing trends of haze days of Guangdong were obvious in the Pearl River Delta area, Shantou, Nanxiong and so on. Correlation coefficient was 0.78 between the annual mean recording hazes days and statistical hazes days during 1981-2013 in Guangdong and correlated significantly with each other, but statistical hazes days was more objective and reasonable than recording hazes days, and analysis and discussion for the cause of the two difference.
