The dynamic evolution characteristics of the vegetation coverage in Liaoning Province from 2000 to 2014 is analyzed herein by means of ArcGIS software with the supplement of the linear regression method and piecewise linear regression method on the basis of MODIS - NDVI data. The result shows that( 1) Temporally,NDVI( Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) of the vegetation in Liaoning province shows an obvious interannually increased trend, and the average annual NDVI value is 0.496 with a mutation in 2005. NDVI mutation years of spring, summer, autumn and vegetation growing season are 2006, 2005,2009 and 2004 respectively. The fluctuated catastrophe point of autumn is obvious lag, while the peak of the vegetation growing season is in summer and is concentrated in August.( 2) Spatially, significant regional differences are there for the vegetation coverage in Liaoning Province with the distribution characteristics of high in the east and low in the mid-west. The excellent vegetation-covered areas in Liaoning Province basically coincide with the boundaries of the eastern mountain areas of Liaoning Province, while the poor vegetation-covered areas are mainly concentrated in Chaoyang City and the northeast of Fuxin City.( 3) The degree of vegetation coverage of Liaoning Province presents a pattern of higher on the shade slope than that on the sunny slope, while the slope direction with the best degree of vegetation coverage is the direction of the north by west.( 4) The vegetation coverage of Liaoning Province from 2000 to 2014 mainly maintains the status quo with only a little improvement, while the regions those remain unchanged are concentrated within the mid-east area of the province, however,a slight degradation phenomenon occurs along the zone from Liaoyang City to Shenyang City, but the improvement in the north-west area of the province is more significant.
