WASHINGTON (March 27, 2017)— The U.S. Senate today rejected a Congressional Review Act resolution to revoke a regulation limiting methane emissions from oil and gas production on federal lands. A 51-49 vote against advancing the resolution was reached, letting the Bureau of Land Management methane waste prevention rule continue.

“This was a smart move by the U.S. Senate to preserve a common-sense measure that helps companies cut methane waste from natural gas and oil production on public and tribal lands. This rule ensures that companies use modern technologies and best practices to reduce emissions of methane and associated pollutants, protecting public health and saving money for state governments and taxpayers.”
“Methane causes far more warming than carbon dioxide emissions and must continue to be reined in to address the increasing threat of climate change.”
