Post-Doctoral Research Scientist – Atmospheric Science The Department of Atmospheric Sciences (www.atmos.illinois.edu) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is seeking a Post-Doctoral scientist to conduct research aimed at improving our knowledge of global cloud properties through past, present, and future satellite and in situ observations, and to use this knowledge for the betterment of weather and climate predictions. The successful candidate will have considerable flexibility in the direction of their research, depending on their interest and expertise.
We seek candidates with a Ph.D. in atmospheric sciences or related field. Preferences will be given to candidates with experience in satellite remote sensing of cloud properties, the modeling of radiative transfer, or large-scale data processing and analysis. Candidates should be highly motivated and creative with excellent verbal and written communication skills. They should have the ability to work both independently and in a team, help mentor students, and lead projects to successful completion. Candidates must have proficient programming skills and be familiar with a Linux environment. Supercomputing experience would be an asset since a component of research will be carried out on Blue Waters (bluewaters.ncsa.illinois.edu) – a petascale computing facility managed by the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois. The successful candidate will be expected to publish and present results at national and international venues.
The initial appointment will be for one year with a strong potential for multi-year renewal based on performance and availability of funds.
