The Chilean government has established 11 Strategic Programs designed to foster the development of different economic sectors over the next ten years. As part of the Health and Development Strategic Program, the Ministry of Economy, Development and Tourism asked the RAND Corporation to create a roadmap to foster the development of health information technology (IT) in the public health system in Chile. This project had two phases. For the first phase, researchers conducted an environmental scan and key-informant interviews designed to evaluate the current state of health IT in Chile and to identify opportunities and challenges associated with the growth of health IT over the coming ten years. Using the results from the first phase, as well as feedback from a briefing for key stakeholders, the researchers developed five objectives for the roadmap and identified activities to achieve each objective. This report describes the roadmap, which should be considered a guide for developing more-specific and detailed activities and timelines, and presents some recommendations for the ministry to consider when implementing the roadmap.
