The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is awarding $91,000 in environmental education grant funding to the Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group in Belfair, Washington. The competitive grant award will assist students with hands-on science education to protect local water quality and watershed health.

The Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group will use the environmental education grant to engage low-income and tribal students in watershed restoration through hands-on experiential learning in the classroom, at summer camp and in after-school programs.

Students will be engaged in programs like the Salmon in the Classroom and Students in the Watershed curriculum to get kids outside for environmental learning. EnviroCamp and GreenSTREAM are summer-long programs that connect students with the Hood Canal watershed through field-based learning opportunities and classroom activities that combine science, technology, reading, engineering, art and math in an environmentally-relevant way. A Green STEM summit will be held for 200 students.

Overall, the grant-funded programs help provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to make informed environmental decisions and take responsible actions to protect their environment.
